Dedicated Sessions Hydrogen

5 Nov – 11:50 – 13:10

Subsurface Energy Storage Technologies

This session will explore cutting-edge applications and impacts of advanced energy storage solutions. We will discuss applications of Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) explaining how CAES technology works, its benefits, and potential applications in the energy sector focusing on the recent project developments.

Additionally, the session will provide insights into underground thermal storage, explaining its principles, applications, and benefits in energy storage systems.

As an example, the economic feasibility of Very High-Temperature Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (VHT-BTES) systems will be discussed. We will examine how underground flows impact these systems and discuss strategies to optimize their performance and cost-effectiveness.

This comprehensive session is designed for professionals interested in the latest developments in energy storage technologies. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how these advanced systems can contribute to a more sustainable and efficient energy future.

Understanding natural hydrogen systems

In this session we cover the latest science and developments on natural hydrogen. Natural hydrogen is becoming an important part of the hydrogen supply chain. We will discuss the hydrogen system, from source to trap. We will also discuss how natural hydrogen can be produced from natural reservoirs or form stimulated sources.

Lessons learned and opportunities in hydrogen storage

Hydrogen and compressed air storage in salt caverns have been identified as a good solution for large-scale energy storage to accommodate demand fluctuation from the electricity grid. Salt caverns have been widely used for natural gas, crude oil, hydrogen, compressed air, and other energy storages for many years.  This dedicated session aims to bring together rock salt and salt cavern’s specialists to discuss the lessons learned from salt cavern’s operations. Topics will range from monitoring and operating salt caverns to the importance of repurposing legacy seismic data to assess the potential for energy storage in certain regions.

Panel Discussion: the hydrogen economy – from source to market

On the panel: representatives from Academia, Industry, regulatory authorities

We will discuss the challenges, opportunities, and pathways for the European hydrogen economy. Different sources of hydrogen will have to feed into a system that allows consumers to plan and operate with a trusted source of energy, delivered at competitive prices. Currently many different activities and stakeholders around the world are working intensively together to deliver their share for this exciting and essential contribution to the energy transition. We will illustrate the status of different aspects for shaping a hydrogen economy.

Underground hydrogen storage pilot projects
Part 1: Salt caverns

Energy storage will be critical to provide flexibility and robustness to a largely renewable based energy system in the future. For durations of weeks to months and for storage capacities in the GWh to TWh range, underground hydrogen storage will be the only option next to geographically limited pumped-hydro storage.

Extensive lab experiments and numerical simulation activities have significantly advanced our understanding of underground hydrogen storage during the last 5-10 years. These activities are increasingly complemented by piloting and demonstration projects that test the technologies in real life conditions and as components of an integrated value chain.

This session will showcase several underground hydrogen storage pilot projects in salt caverns, depleted gas fields, and aquifers in a variety of countries and geological environments. It will aim at distilling main insights and conclusions from the work to date and highlight remaining uncertainties and de-risking requirements to inform the R&D community. Moreover, non-technical challenges, e.g. related to regulatory and public approval, will be addressed in the session. Next to presentation, sufficient time will be reserved for discussion to contrast the experiences of different operators and to address questions from the audience.
