Satellite InSAR: Cost-Effective Monitoring and Risk Mitigation for the Energy Transition

Workshop Description

This workshop introduces the power of Satellite Interferometry (InSAR) as a transformative tool for the Global Energy Transition.
Participants will learn how millimetric surface displacement data serves as a cost-effective early warning system for subsurface hazards in CCS, hydrogen storage, and geothermal projects.
Moving from basic principles and advanced algorithms (SqueeSAR®) to practical case studies, the session explores how to mitigate risks such as caprock failure and well integrity loss.
Furthermore, it highlights how InSAR provides essential insights into civil infrastructure integrity and regulatory compliance, effectively eliminating the HSE risks associated with traditional on-site instrumentation.

Course Outline

The workshop is designed to take participants from theoretical foundations to practical, hands-
on data application:

Introduction to Satellite Radar Interferometry:
○ Basic principles of InSAR and the evolution to multi-image algorithms.
○ Deep dive into SqueeSAR® technology: Precision, accuracy, and 2D motion
estimation.

Energy Transition & Subsurface Applications:
○ Monitoring strategies for CO2 storage (CCS) and underground gas/hydrogen
storage.
○ Identifying fault reactivation and ensuring well and pipeline integrity.
○ Specialized monitoring for offshore platforms and geothermal fields.

● Support for Reservoir Modelling:
○ Translating surface displacement to reservoir dynamics.
○ Volume and pressure change estimation through inverse modelling.
○ Integrated monitoring workflows for containment verification.

● Synergy and Data Integration:
○ Comparative analysis: InSAR vs. conventional monitoring (GPS, Optical
Levelling).
○ How to combine remote sensing with existing geotechnical datasets.

Hands-on Data: Outputs and Visualisation:
○ How to read and interpret interferometric results.
○ Understanding deliverables and navigating the TREmaps® platform.

Dariusz obtained his MSc at Wroclaw University in Poland in 2002.

After his PhD (2007) in geology, gas isotope geochemistry and microbiology at the Indiana University, Bloomington, he has worked in Subsurface Technology at ConocoPhillips for three years followed by one year of consulting (Dariusz BioGeoChem) working on petroleum systems and subsurface biomethane stimulation.

In 2012 he has joined SLB and since then has been developing interpretation workflowsand answer products for surface formation evaluation (mud gas and cuttings logging). Since couple of years his works involves H2 and helium logging and exploration, for which the global activity is rapidly growing.

This topic also brings ideas of stimulated natural H2 in the subsurface, which brings together geological and fluid geochemistry knowledge to a new level of collaboration among academic and industrial communities.

Dariusz is very active within the geochemistry community, with multiple peer-reviewed papers and chapters, numerous conference-related activities, journal editorships, and intellectual property publications.
