New Horizons
In recent decades, renewable energies have grown fast, especially the solar and wind energies. Technologies evolved rapidly and efficiently to set up these renewables in numerous different places, on-shore and off-shore.
Geothermal, although well developed in specific geological settings like volcanic plays and despite the rapid development of direct use (ground sourced heat pumps) during the past many years, is still far from its potential at a global scale.
In this session we will investigate breakthrough solutions that would bring geothermal energy to a whole new level. It includes new targets like offshore geothermal and novel technologies to lower overall costs and to increase energy outputs. We look forward our speakers will break the current horizon of geothermal!

Opportunities and Challenges of critical mineral extraction from geothermal fluids
Lithium, but also critical minerals, are currently considered for co-production from geothermal fluids. Many of these minerals are critical to support the energy transition and our ambitions towards net zero carbon. While this clearly sounds like a win-win situation, there are many challenges associated with this technology which would like to discuss along with the game-changing opportunities.

Delft Subsurface Energy Lab – Campus geothermal well
A geothermal doublet has been installed in a sedimentary reservoir for direct-use heating on the TU Delft campus, targeted to supply around 25 MW of thermal energy at peak conditions. The doublet has been designed with two primary aims of research and commercial heat supply. The research programme involves the installation of a wide range of instruments alongside an extensive logging and coring program and monitoring network.
In this dedicated session we will cover several aspects of the project development and provide the latest insights from past and future research activities on logging, geology, monitor and simulation.

Exploring New Roads for a Sustainable and Risks free Geothermal Energy Production – European Projects Case Studies
In the present context of Energy Transition in Europe and Worldwide, harnessing Geothermal Energy appears as a valuable option to improve Energy production Mix by exploiting an abundant and yet neglected clean source of Energy. In the light of recent and various endeavors, we can get a grasp of the actual difficulty of this task. Projects must cope with both economic and socio-environmental imperatives enforced by state regulators that are not necessarily easy to conciliate. To be able to genuinely push geothermal energy at scale, a fit for purpose approach appears to be necessary. Contrary to other types of power plants, geothermal energy needs to be placed strategically, reusing already available hydrogeological assets, and bringing heat directly to the end consumers, without necessarily converting it to electricity on the way. Careful geophysical and hydrogeological studies of prospects must also be carried out to assess the impact of long-term productions from a seismic and environmental point of view. More Data and Case studies are necessary to really start identifying standard designs reusable at European scale. Case Studies selected for this technical session feature projects that boldly explore new options, successful or not but that anyway provide valuable insights to redefine best practices for this industry field.
