Field Trip 4

Field Trip 4 – 27 October

A Journey Through the Anthropocene - Site Visits to the River De Rotte & Sand Motor (Kijkduin)

Description

Join us for a unique and eclectic field excursion that brings the Anthropocene to life. We’ll begin near Rotterdam, at a key site along the River Rotte that serves as a microcosm of the Dutch lowlands, to explore polder and water management, land subsidence, and adverse ground conditions.

Next, at the Sand Motor—a mega-nourishment project south of The Hague—we’ll examine the history of Dutch coastal management, from 19th century groynes and dune reinforcement strategies to modern soft measures and Building with Nature approaches. We’ll also study embryonic dunes, observe the energy transition in action, and experience the intensive land use for which the Netherlands is renowned.

Come and discover how humans have become a dominant geological force!
